About

For over twenty years, Justin Roberts has been writing songs for kids and families that explore the rich tapestry of childhood experience. From the butterflies of a first day to the distracted thoughts of a little leaguer, Justin has written songs that touch upon the laughs, beauty, and the bumps in the road of childhood.

His latest album, Wild Life, is his most album personal yet. Joined by an eclectic group of instrumentalists including pianist Lisa Kaplan (Eighth Blackbird) baroque cellist Anna Steinhoff, percussionist Gerald Dowd (Robbie Fulks), and vocalist Nora O’Connor (Flat Five, the Decemberists), this tender and uplifting collection of songs was inspired by the birth of Roberts’ first child.

It includes songs about anticipation and uncertainty that may speak to the parental experience while at the same time imparting a message of unconditional love for the child listening. The sounds range from finger-plucked ukulele to pulsing flutes and moving bass lines with etherial touches of piano. His wife Anna Steinhoff’s pizzicato cello is used in lieu of bass at most opportunities.

The album was recorded at VSOP Studios in Chicago by Matt Hennessey and produced by Chicago-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Davis, who has worked with Justin for over 20 years. Davis was a founding member of the power pop band Frisbie as well an essential member of Justin’s touring band, the Not Ready for Naptime Players.
